One of our members & Girl Scout Troop Leader, Holly Chiarello, is collecting donations for Daisy & Brownie Troop #301. They will be collecting donations from 1-4pm on Sunday 5/26 at the church parking lot. They will take donations to GUTS church, who will transport them to the Moore area.
Holly also needs help from someone with a truck and/or trailer to transport the donated items to GUTS church on Sunday at 4pm.

Below I’ve printed a very recent text conversation I had with a member of Garnett Church of Christ and Girl Scout Mom, after the Moore tornado hit. I want to give this as an example of what we do to join efforts of others, rather than opening our own effort after a disaster.
My hope is that if you are part of a small or medium sized church or organization wondering what you can do, consider this approach and free people up to train, serve, learn more, do, give through established and experienced relief organizations. For example, after Joplin tornado, some church members wanted to go and help, and we asked them to join Red Cross or another official organization operating relief efforts, and they did. What they learned was that working through a large organization is most helpful, and donating money is usually better than clothing that needs sorted and creates a huge backlog and mess that needs managed. If clothing is donated, for example, we do it through an organization we know is on the ground consistently in these situations not one that arises just after the storm. Another time we helped with a major relief effort through our church was Katrina, and even then we worked throughFEMA heavily.
What I’m saying is, our church body believes right now that there are other churches and organizations in town who do a whole lot better at large-scale relief efforts than we do, and so we joyfully join them rather than attempting to duplicate efforts. We had the same approach when we considered building houses a few years ago and we joined with other churches and Habitat for Humanity to build, rather than going out on our own and forming a new approach by our church.

For example, this morning we sent out the following article from Tulsa World of ways to help rather than getting our own truck, which we believe would simply just cause more confusion in Moore. Tulsa World article about how to help Moore and surrounding area victims
OK, back to the text conversation. The text thread originated from a Girl Scout Mom, an adult named Holly Chiarello, who is also a member of Garnett Church of Christ, and she gave me permission to print our text conversation verbatim.
Holly: Hi Greg! Is our church doing any kind of donation drive or anything 4 the people of moore? My Girl Scout troop is goin 2 try 2 hold a drive sunday in BA!

Holly: Ok will do! We will take anything! Monetary, clothes, food, water! All
i got left 2 do is get permission from a business in BA 2 use parking
lot 4 about 3 hours!
Greg: If you can’t find a place, use the church and you have my permission
for sure right now as peace of mind backup parking lot — I figure you
might want to use a Ba location but feel free to use ours
Holly: I’ll tell you what! Id be honored to use ours! Thats perfect! Thank you
greg! Im goin to say from 1pm to 4pm…longer if doing well! Is that

Greg: Yes, time is perfect and if people know they can bring donations to
church so pls send plans ASAP so we can put in bulletin … our method
at Garnett is to partner with groups who already doing good, so if you
have a truck or place you are taking like Guts or somewhere that’s
great … who’s getting donations to Moore?
Holly: Were are trying 2 find a truck to take down or thinking to donate to
red cross here in town. or if possible a church of christ in moore is
my 1st choice! =) If you would like let beth know that we are for sure setting up at 1pm till 4pm. Taking all items..even gently used clothing and linens!Anything helps!

Greg: My experience over the years, Holly, is to get a list from Red Cross and do not stray from it and insist people bring good items from the list and then take it to a distributor like Red Cross to transport but you have to be clear what you can bring and don’t try to duplicate
efforts … if Red Cross or Guts church doing something, get their list and have everybody bring what matches that distributor and take everything over there that afternoon after collection. The reason I’m directing you this way is because I’ve been in this situation many times and it always works better to work thru experienced
organizations already taking things and do collection together and arrange to take to the spot where a truck is already gettin filled … guts for example said they’ll keep filling trucks and taking when full so if you arrange enough folks just to take a few miles to guts at 4
pm that might work as long as someone on duty at guts

to drive down there! And red cross is establisged…so is guts! I like
the guts idea! =)

We will need lots of volunteers that week (& even before that week). Visit the Day Camp table in Café Mosaic for ways to volunteer. (Bringing snacks & donuts, helping prepare lunches, running activities, set up & tear down, etc.) There is something for everyone & we really need your help to welcome these campers & families that come from our community.

The weekly mowing, done on Fridays or Saturdays, should take less than 2 hours. If you can commit, maybe several times, to helping this summer it would be appreciated. Also, we need a volunteer willing to use a grass trimmer (hand held or on wheels) as needed around the property. Bob Schweikhard will help coordinate these efforts. Garnett is offering Financial Peace University with Dave Ramsey again this summer. This learning opportunity, concerned with helping us manage and utilize our finances in a Christian manner, will begin at Garnett on Wednesday evening, June 5, and continue on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer months. It’s important to pre-register now so that your class materials can be ordered and will arrive on time. The cost for the study is $100.00 for first time attenders. Thank you for all of your prayers for Brian Baker. The last doctor actually thinks he has whooping cough. He is no longer contagious and is doing a lot better. Please pray that he is fully recovered by the time he leaves for Dry Bones.
B.J Winn, long time member of Garnett, passed away Tuesday. Funeral details will be sent out when we have more information.
Jim Shepard’s father in Minnesota also passed away this week. Jim will be traveling to MN before he leaves for Nashville next week.
A family close to our church body has taken in a single mom with four kids. The single mom needs a car because hers is broken down. Donations for repair or donation of a car would be very much appreciated.–Garnett staff

Center for Christian Living
Robert Garland is leading a study on the spiritual disciplines of meditation, fasting, and study. We were instructed on the meaning of these disciplines in our opening night, and urged as well, to enter into a 40 day challenge of actually practicing them. It’s not too late for you to begin sharing in this special study. Class meets 5/8 at 6:30 PM in room 201.
The Financial Peace University study with Dave Ramsey will be offered again this summer, starting June 5. If you are interested in participating in this class, contact Bill Campbell. Those who participated in the class the first time may do so again for free. Those who have not shared yet in the study should take advantage of the great opportunity to grow in better managing your finances effectively.

Girls’ Night

Girls can be picked up at 9 pm.

We’re not asking for your money this time–just your unwanted treasures! So start cleaning out your closets and let us sell your stuff at the 2013 Yard Sale to benefit Debt Reduction! The sale will be Saturday, May 18 @ 8 am. Household and clothing items can be dropped off on Sunday mornings at the Mountain Movers table in Café Mosaic. (Furniture and large item drop off will be on Friday May 17th.)

Day Center Homeless Shelter Needs
The Day Center has an URGENT need for TOOTHPASTE. You can leave it in the foyer or give to Kim Baker. If you would prefer, you can donate money toward buying it. My goal is to collect 100 tubes of toothpaste for them this Sun. Other needs: men’s pants — all sizes, towels — new or used, men’s socks and underwear. Please indicate “DAY CENTER” if you leave a bag of donations. (Or we won’t know & we will sell it in the Yard Sale!)

Center for Christian Living
Garnett’s Center for Christian Living enjoyed two great evenings with Marvin Phillips. Both nights the classroom was full as Marvin shared with those attending on the themes of ”Important Lessons I’ve Learned In Life”; and “Important Lessons I’ve Learned In Ministry.” We were all enriched and blessed.
We have three more weeks of helpful instruction that’s on the way in the Center for Christian Living. Garnett shepherd, Robert Garland, will be leading the Center participants in a better understanding and utilization of the Spiritual Disciplines. Please don’t miss the three upcoming Wednesday evenings of May 1, 8 and 15. Each class session will begin at 6:30 pm in room 201. Child care will be available during each class session.
Beginning June 5 at Garnett, and continuing throughout the summer months, will be another edition of Financial Peace, with Dave Ramsey being the instructor on how to more responsibly and faithfully handle your finances. We’ll have more information soon.

Garnett Lawn Care Volunteers
We are asking for volunteers to help with lawn care this summer as a way to save money, thus helping to pay off our debt. The weekly mowing, done on Fridays or Saturdays, should take less than two hours. If you can commit, maybe several times, to helping this summer it would be appreciated. Also, we need a volunteer willing to use a grass trimmer (hand held or on wheels) as needed around the property. Bob and Tim Schweikhard will help coordinate these efforts. A sign-up sheet is at the coffee bar.

The sale will be Saturday, May 18, from 8 am-noon. Household and clothing items can be dropped off on Sunday mornings at the Mountain Movers table in Café Mosaic. (Furniture and large item collection will come at a later date.)
2013 Day Camp 4 Kids
June 17-21 will be our 3rd annual Day Camp here at Garnett for any 1st-6th graders. Registration forms can be found on the brochure racks in Cafe Mosaic, or you can register online:

Day Center Homeless Shelter Needs
General shelter needs: men’s pants all sizes; adult crew socks; men’s and women’s belts all sizes; men’s underwear all sizes; books for adults; personal care items (shampoo, conditioner, body wash–from hotels or full size).
Clinic needs: sleeping masks; adjustable canes; individual Kleenex packages.
Urgent needs: new or gently used household items; twin sheet sets; bath towels; dishwashing liquid and all-purpose cleaner; dishes, bowls and cups/mugs; eating utensils; can openers; alarm clocks.

Our first Wednesday evening with Marvin Phillips in Garnett’s Center for Christian Living was most inspirational. Marvin shared with us on “Important Lessons I’ve Learned in Ministry.” Wednesday, April 24, Marvin’s thoughts will be directed toward “Important Lessons I’ve Learned in Ministry.” Don’t miss it!! Come yourself!! Invite your friends!! The class begins at 6:30 pm in room 201. Childcare is always available during class time.
On May 1, 8 and 15 in Garnett’s Center for Christian Living Robert Garland, one of our Garnett shepherds, will be devoting three weeks to our instruction and encouragement on The Spiritual Disciplines. Help will be provided in your spiritual walk as a Christian disciple.

Preschool Bible Class Volunteers Needed
If you have a heart for children, have a child between the ages of two and five, or just want an opportunity to make a difference in a kiddo’s life, please consider volunteering to help out in the Preschool Bible Class on Sunday mornings. Monitors Needed
East Central Junior High is looking for test monitors this month. On April 19 they need 20 people to help that day from 8 am–12 pm, and 6 people from 1:30 pm–3:20 pm. Volunteers must be at least 18 and out of high school. Please contact Judy Treat, 8th Grade Counselor, at the school.
