In 1984, when human rights activist Ray Barnett was summoned to help the thousands of orphaned, abandoned and starving children in war-torn Uganda, he and his team were inspired one day by the singing of one small boy. That sparked the idea of forming the African Children’s Choir to show the world that Africa’s most vulnerable children have beauty, dignity, and unlimited ability. And this is a business as mission. The proceeds from love offerings come back to thousands of children in student sponsorship programs the choir supports. The African Children’s Choir has performed to packed audiences around the globe, from major churches to every major TV network–including American Idol–to guest appearances with Christian music superstars Michael W. Smith, Josh Groban and many others. Don’t miss this unique opportunity; make your plans now to see The African Children’sChoir in concert on January 22, 2010, presented by Garnett Church of Christ and held at the Green Country Event Center. Admission is free but a love offering will be taken, so please be prepared to write checks, give cash, or credit card to the choir to help children in Africa.

Harleys and Horses Life Group takes annual trip to FFATC
Each Thanksgiving our Harleys and Horses Life Group led by Mike and Jeanne Hornsby goes to the Miami/Quapaw area to “Freedom from Addiction Through Christ” (FFATC) and takes a meal and other helpful items such as blankets and towels to the residents in the addiction recovery residency program there.
“FFATC had the pleasure of receiving an annual blessing from the Garnett Church of Christ members who provided and served a wonderful feast cooked by them to residents and staff,” according to a recent FFATC report.
Bruce Judd, who heads this project, gave a personal testimony and presented aprons monogrammed with “WOF Pack.” WOF means “Women of Faith” and is a ministry of the Faith Baptist and other Claremore area churches.
Mike Hornsby also gave a testimony and read Scriptures. Others who helped with the meal are Gerald and Jan Rider, Tim and Sandy Schweikhard, Clint and Tammy Parsons, Kim and Dale Brown, Bruce and Valerie Judd and Helen Morgan. Make sure your friends are on the list!

The following is from Teresa McIlroy, who spoke at The Gathering on January 5th. Teresa shared how to write SMART goals. She’s also offering her time & help this month. See the last paragraph for her availability.
One of the questions we tackled at The Gathering was “Why do we tend to make the same resolutions year after year?” The reason is because new year’s resolutions are generally written as outcome based goals.
Outcome based goals are written to describe what you want to achieve, not HOW the result is attained. We learned how to write SMART goals, or behavioral goals, which include the way you achieve the result you desire.
The acronym SMART stands for:
Specificabout the actions and behaviors you want to engage in. Details of how and when! Measurableidentifies when success is attained. Numbers based. Action based: behavior you want to be doing on a consistent basis Realistic: is this doable for me? Timelinein which to accomplish the goal (putting it on your schedule now versus “getting around to it” when there is time).
With SMART goal setting, we turn visions and intentions into actions and reality!
Before you sit down to write your goals it is extremely helpful to write a Wellness Vision. We talked about this on Wednesday night as well.
If you would like help writing your Wellness Vision and SMART goals, Theresa will be hanging out at Cafe Mosaic, Wednesday Jan 19th and 26th from 5-7pm and Friday Jan 21st and 28th from 12-1:30pm. _________________

Life Group and Family Reflections 1. In the opening pages of The Story (1 Kings 3) what is it about Solomon’s prayer that pleases God? 2. How important is developing discernment/wisdom in living as bearers of God’s image? 3. How do we get wisdom? (Proverbs 1-4; 1:7, 2:5, 3:1-12) 4. What factors contributed to Solomon’s fall? (1 Kings 11) 5. What can we do to protect ourselves from the same kinds of sins?
