Making an Advent Wreath
On Sunday December 18, the fourth Sunday of Advent, light the first three candles, then the fourth candle, the Angel’s candle. This candle reminds us of the part the angels played in Jesus’ birth. Read Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 1:28-38 to see how the angels were involved in this miracle.

On Christmas Eve, light all four smaller candles. Then read together the account of Christ’s birth in Luke 2:1-20, and light the larger white candle in the center, the Christ Candle. As a closing, sing “Silent Night” and/or “O Come, All Ye Faithful.”

On Christmas Day, follow your family traditions but also come and worship joyfully with Christians at Garnett at 10 am as the children lead us to adore Christ and enjoy the light he brings to all.

Sermon Title: Living Christ 10
You Will Have Joy!

Memory Verse: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

December 16: Blessed are Those Who Believed. Send a photo of a person in our church or your family who has died and that you want to remember this season. Send a digital photo along with name, date of birth and death and brief 1-2 sentences about the person you want to remember. We plan to show those photos December 16. The purpose is to honor those who’ve gone before and encourage those who miss them and long for a time when we will see them in heaven.

December 25: Children’s Christmas Program! Greg will also be asking children on that day, not “What did you get for Christmas?” but “What did you GIVE for Christmas?” So children — and Adults — get ready to answer something you GAVE this Christmas.

Green Country Event Center
Here are some interesting facts about this past year at the GCEC: hundreds came to attend graduations, weddings, memorial services, quincineras, Dillon International day camps, and the Hmong New Year celebration. Hundreds of people came here for church services, education, and to celebrate. There are close to 60 people who are employed in some way by the GCEC and we’ve given out 600 bags of groceries through the food pantry. Fourteen different languages are spoken by the 550 ESL (English as a Second Language) students.

Literally thousands of people’s lives were impacted by Garnett and the Green Country Event Center. We could not have done this on our own, and we are grateful for the many different people God has led to our front doors and the various ways they help us to reach out and serve our community.

Prayer Requests
Our dear friend, Elmer Bowman, passed into God’s hands on Monday evening, December 5. Services will be at Garnett on Wednesday, December 14 at 11am and viewing will be Tuesday, November 13, from 11am – 7pm at Advantage Funeral Home at 9761 E. 31st Street in Tulsa (just west of Hwy 169 on 31st).

Elmer did not have financial arrangements for his service and his family is asking for donations for burial expenses in lieu of flowers. Total costs pending are approximately $3,000. To our Garnett family: anyone that would like more information or to assist with the funeral costs please contact Lance Newsom or Janet Collins at the church office, (918)663-3000 .

Making an Advent Wreath
On Sunday December 11, the third Sunday of Advent, light the first and second candles, and then the third purple candle (or, if you have one, the pink candle), the Shepherd Candle. This candle signifies the joy of the shepherds when they heard about the birth of their Savior. The account is in Luke 2:8-20.

On Sunday December 18, light the first three candles, then the fourth candle, the Angel’s candle.

Small Group Discussion

What are you waiting for most right now?
In your mind, is waiting mostly good or mostly bad?
How can changing our view to a more biblical view of waiting also help you be more patient?
How can changing our view of waiting help us live out Psalm 46:10?

Contact Christmas Store

Contact Church of Christ, a mission church in Tulsa, would like to fill the lives of 120 families during this season. Their church family, a community of Christians hit hard by generational poverty and sin, serves as gracious hosts of an annual Christmas Store. The Store provides dignity to financially struggling people by allowing them to purchase gifts for their children (babies–teens). Rather than receive a hand-out, they receive the toys/gifts at 25% of the original price. The money collected from the Christmas Store is used to sponsor Contact’s summer youth programs, such as a no-cost camp for urban youth. While the Christmas Store brings dignity and blessings now in this season, it also blesses children in the future.

Living Christ Week 8: Come Lord Jesus! Memory: Revelation 21:1-5

What is Advent?
Advent is a tradition of Christians that means “coming” or “arrival” and calls us to wait for the second coming of Christ as we celebrate the first coming of his birth.

How did it begin?
The Catholic Church started Advent as an alternative to the Roman New Year’s celebrations.

What is it for?
Advent is a chance to change our train of thought from the culture’s way of thought and life to Christ’s way of thought and life.

Isn’t this just a tradition of men and not biblical?
The return of Jesus is biblical and Adventus is a Latin translation for the Greek biblical word, “parousia,” meaning second coming. So Advent is both a reminder of how the Jews waited for the Messiah and also a
reminder that we wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.

When is it celebrated?
Advent is celebrated in the four weeks leading up to Christmas. Traditions around Advent include making visual reminders of Christ’s coming in flesh and his return.

Making an Advent Wreath
You can make a wreath four Sundays before Christmas as a visual reminder, especially for children, that Christ, the Light of the World, actually has come—and that we need to get ready for his birthday. You and your household or small group can use some of these ideas to make Advent an important part of your celebration, even if you have never done it
before.

Buy or make a wreath and push four purple candles or three purple and one pink candle into the wreath. They will be lit in this order: the Prophecy Candle, the Bethlehem Candle, the Shepherd Candle, and the Angel Candle. In the center of the wreath, put one larger white candle, the Christ Candle.

On each of the four Sundays, set a specific time for lighting your Advent wreath.

On Sunday November 27, light the first purple candle, the Prophecy Candle, which stands for the prophecies about the Messiah’s birth. The reading for this candle is Malachi 3:1-4.

On Sunday December 4, light the first candle and the second candles, the Bethlehem Candle. This one represents the birthplace of Jesus. Micah 5:2 is the Scripture reading.

On Sunday December 11, light the first and second candles, and then the third purple candle (or, if you have one, the pink candle), the Shepherd Candle. This candle signifies the joy of the shepherds when they heard about the birth of their Savior. The account is in Luke 2:8-20.

On Sunday December 18, light the first three candles, then the fourth candle, the Angel’s candle.

Staying in the Black on Black Friday
From Dave Ramsey’s email to those taking Financial Peace University Wednesdays this Fall comes a great message about the upcoming onslaught that can lead to stress and not peace. We edited for space.

The one-day sale that makes people lose their minds will be here in a week. Don’t go into Black Friday—or any of your Christmas shopping—without a plan to keep your Baby Step goals in tact!

If you have a strategy, you can stand strong in the face of the hottest day-after-Thanksgiving deals.

1. Make Your List and Check It Twice: If you’re going to get up at the crack of dawn to brave the crowds, decide what you are looking for ahead of time and what you will pay for it. Stay grounded in the midst of the hype, and whatever you do, don’t buy stuff that isn’t in the budget! You’ll be thankful when you’re not paying for this year’s Christmas a year from now. If you have the cash saved up and are feeling spunky, go for it!

2. Just Say No: Sleeping in after a full day of food and family might actually be in your best interest. Look at the Black Friday deals you’ve gotten before and ask yourself the simple question: Was it worth it? Most of the best deals are gone before the average person makes it to the store anyway!

3. Contentment Is Free: Gifts are fun, but there’s nothing that brings more joy during this season than being thankful for what we have. Think about who has blessed you with money or taught you how to handle it. Maybe it was your grandma, a parent or a family friend. Drop that person a note, make a call, or thank them in person. It’s a simple but powerful way to bless someone in your life and end up with a heart full of gratefulness yourself!

4. Make a Christmas Budget. Instead of going on auto-pilot, have a family meeting or get the decision-makers together and make a firm budget and keep it. Don’t use credit cards! You’ll be glad you didn’t when you are not paying for Christmas next May! Don’t be pressured by advertising to overspend. A sample budget is available at the coffee bar.
