Sunday 10/23 announcements
Memory Verses
October 9: Fasting – Matthew 4:4
October 16: Retreat – Psalm 46:10
October 23: Stewardship – Psalm 115:1,16; 1 Peter 4:10
Today’s Message
We’ve been participating in four practices that will help us prepare for Christlikeness as we launch into a “Year of Living Christ.” As you read through these, what is a common thread running through each?
1. Fasting – Many have participated in the beans and rice fast and have given money they saved on food or “cheat cards” to help the food pantry ministry feed the hungry. Fasting is a practice of Christ, and it helps us do spiritual inventory and takes away a dependence on food and reminds us of Christ’s words in Matthew 4:4, “Man cannot live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
2. Financial Peace – Fifty people from Garnett and Connection and neighbors kicked off the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University learning to live like no one else so we can give like no one else.
3. REVEAL – 55 people have taken the spiritual growth survey called “Reveal.” Thank you. This is a beginning stage of spiritual inventory as we begin a journey of Living Christ. Please use this link http://www.revealnow.com/slsurvey?uid=6275 to access the survey by October 22.
4. Retreat – 71 participated in the All-Church Retreat at New Life Ranch. Thanks to all who came or sacrificed so others could come. The weather was beautiful and the place was excellent, and the time together was even better than the weather and the place! We ate together, worshipped around the campfire, worshipped outdoors for Sunday am service, and focused on Psalm 46:10. Let’s do it again next year and double the number who come!
Courageous – The Movie
Four men, one calling: To serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, David Thomson, and Shane Fuller are confident and focused. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God … and to their children?
Taylor’s Life Group will be meeting tonight at 76:30 pm at the Cinemark at Tulsa, 10802 East 71st St., to see the 7 pm movie. Join us!
Thanksgiving Meal & Harvest Food Drive
The money given during the fast will go toward hosting a meal for those with no means or family to eat with on Thanksgiving. We’re hosting a Thanksgiving meal 11 am – 1 pm thanks to the generosity of Owasso Baptist Church making the meals, and we’ll go get it and serve it here at Garnett.
Student Ministry Parents (and Everyone else too!):
New curriculum is being fine-tuned, a calendar for the next year is being crafted, exciting new structure and opportunities are being developed and Sunday, November 13, to discover and discuss all the pertinent details. Get ready! More information about time and place soon.

Spiritual Growth Survey Begins Now!
As a church, we want to do everything we can to support your spiritual growth. We want to know what’s helping you grow spiritually, and what’s getting in the way. So we need your help taking the REVEAL Spiritual Growth Survey that Greg Taylor talked about last Sunday. We will spend time taking the survey Oct 9, but we’d love for you to take it early so we can help those without computers to take the survey while together Sunday, Oct 9.
The survey is ready and you can take it now! Email us at garnettinfo@gmail.com
The survey takes about 30-35 minutes, and this important time that you can help our church grow spiritually. How? The survey findings will help shape our decisions about how to create the best possible ministry strategies–ways to help us grow in Christ. We know you are busy, but this is very important. And pass it along to all your friends who call Garnett Church of Christ their church home.
September 25th Announcements
Connection Church and Garnett Church Partnership Begins Today!
This is a huge day for Garnett Church of Christ and Connection Church. We are partnering in a significant way that we believe is part of a fulfillment of Jesus’s prayer for unity, that we’d all be one, that we’d learn from and grow together in Christ and not stand in the way when God’s Spirit is moving us to work together for a common cause of calling people far from God to become fully devoted followers of Christ. We are members of two different churches but citizens of the Kingdom of God together!
So today is the day we begin partnering with Connection Church in what is now called “Kid City”! Kid City is for infants to 5th graders. We invite all parents to come register your kids in the kiosks in Cafe Mosaic before or during adult worship. The children will be released to their worship and classes for Kid City at 10:30 am during Garnett worship. We are happy to have children of all ages in our Sunday gatherings for this first 30 minutes and then set them free for a little more kid-friendly loud movement learning about Christ and the Word. You can pick up your kids then at 12 pm after classes. If you have an infant – 2 year-old, you can check in before worship and pick up at any time.
We Need Your Help!
Sunday, October 9, we’re going to do something we’ve never done before. We’re asking you to bring your laptops, ipads, or any device that can pull up a web site. The reason for this is that we want to get everyone to participate that day in taking an online survey. We’ll be asking those with devices to help those without access to computers or difficulty using computers to take a Spiritual Life Survey that must be done online, because options change depending on responses you give.
The survey takes about 30 minutes. There will also be a way to complete this online later, and that internet link will be provided later, but we want to get as many people to do the survey while we’re here because we need a high percentage of us to complete in order to make the data meaningful. The survey findings will help shape our decisions about how to create the best possible ministry strategies to serve God and help our congregation grow spiritually. As a church, we want to do everything we can to support your spiritual growth. We want to know what’s helping you grow spiritually, and what’s getting in the way.

Connection Church Update
We have decided to go full steam ahead with the partnership with Connection Church and Garnett Church to jointly operate our Sunday morning children’s program. Next Sunday, September 25 is the launch of this partnership. Here are some of the details so we’ll be ready.
OK, first of all, nothing changes for our worship and class times. We worship at 10 am and classes start at 11:15.
Nursery: A baby nursery will still be staffed and ready beginning at 9:50 am.
Children start in Worship Hall together with us at 10 am: We welcome children of all ages in worship with us. They can stay the whole time or preschool or elementary age children can exit for kid-friendly supervised time during our worship. Watch and listen for the “Kid’s City” slide and cue for children to go to Kid’s City.
Check In: In the cafe you will use a touch screen to check children in for security and be given a label to keep for when you pick up after worship or after class if you choose.
Pick Up: You can pick up your child after worship or stay for a class and pick up after class at 12 pm.
Connection Church will begin their worship at 11 in Phillips Hall, and you are also welcome to join them for their worship services or attend a class. Their worship style is fairly loud instrumental, and the Garnett leadership encourages those who crave that style of worship to attend Connection Church and build on the relationships we’ve already developed.
Remember, we are members of different churches but we are ALL Citizens of the Kingdom of God. Jesus prayed in John 17 that believers would all be one. We do not interpret that to mean all churches to fulfill that prayer need to merge but to live and fellowship and serve as ONE body of Christ who died for all of us and reigns over all of us. Amen!
May God bless Connection Church as we welcome them into our home and make it their home as well.
Daughters of Anna
The Daughters of Anna will not have a luncheon this month. The next luncheon will be Sunday, October 16.

Milestones
We took some time last week to share personal milestones of our faith. Things along the road that help us see our growth in Christ-likeness. Here are some things that were shared:
- Being kind to all people like Christ.
- Dear Lord, help me with Life’s situations to be more like Christ. In Jesus name.
- Spending more prayer (talk time) with God. Praying for favor and forgiveness. Pray for friends and family.
- I need to be more of an example of Christ for my teens.
- I need to work on reaching out to others with a glad heart. To freely offer my assistance where I see a need.
- Becoming more like Christ and helping my children with their choices in life to help them become more like Christ, also.
- Share my faith more.
- Work on more faith and strength.
- Live in the moment now with Jesus.
- Dying to self.
- Bringing my family to Jesus. Yearly or monthly attendance badges.
- Letting go of control and seeing God work!
- Overcoming deep pain. Trusting God to take care of the suffering.
- Mile Markers – 1. I remember that I received a “white” Bible for attending 13 Sunday school days in a row. 2. Memorized the 10 Commandments. 3. Asked to open prayer in class. 4. Asked to help teach.
- In but not of . . .
- Trying to be in the Word every day. Mile Marker suggestions: for daily Bible reading, memorizing scripture.
- I want to love like Jesus. From a Child: I want to learn about God.
- Post parenting prime of Christian/Kingdom life. Finding the best use of this era.
- Pray about everything!
- Courage.
- To live as an example of the grace that was given to me.
- Be a grandparent whose grandchild sees Jesus in me more than myself.
- Respecting others thoughts and opinions more. Understanding them more.
- I need to read the Bible instead of fiction and get back to Jesus.
- Reach out to those in need. Pray more faithfully.
- Loving Christ more and following Christ.
- Work on not being so judgmental about unimportant things.
- Use God’s gift to sing in a way that brings glory to Him.
- To be a student of the Word.
- To walk in obedience to God’s will. To learn more patience in class—to say less and listen more.
- I repent for critical, judgmental (toxic) thoughts about people. Thank you for Grace to remember to say, to myself, when I’m talking to angry people or different people or people infected with virus: “The power of God’s love is greater than this person’s anger, that this person is rooted and grounded in God’s love.” “Greater is He who is in me than getting offended.” I forgive everyone; I choose not to hold a grudge and blame.
- In the past I have been involved in service and areas I had strong conviction that God had called me to. I’ve gone through a transition in my life and I’m struggling to know where God wants me to serve. My prayer is for discernment.
- Understanding others.
- I need help learning to love moment by moment the family God has given me.
- I am learning the Lord is my portion (Lam. 3:24). I remember receiving beautiful Christiana children’s books for memorizing: Lord’ Prayer, 23rd Psalm, Beatitudes, 10 Commandments.
- A follower of Christ puts others before themselves.
- Discipline and self-control to be more like Jesus.
- Having grace, having forgiveness.
- More Christ-like.
- Showing kindness, having/showing compassion.
- Learning to forgive myself.
- To obtain more Christ-likeness and get others to do the same.
- Give up my idol for God.
- I want to give away my life to become a slave to Christ, for he is a good and kind master.

Summer Change-Can Fundraising Project
This project sponsored by Garnett Student Ministry is coming to a close. You might remember that this fundraiser was designed to support Garnett’s “One-More” campaign… one more well, one more missionary supported, one more project, etc…
The change cans that were distributed at the beginning of summer will be collected Sunday, September 11. Please bring your cans and deposit them at the coffee bar Sunday morning. Thanks to everyone for your support in this effort.
