Students/Parents: We have submitted for our summer week in Denver with Dry Bones for our 2012 Mission Trip, and it’s time to discuss who is going to join in this valuable experience next year. If we meet our minimum size, the cost of this trip will be $550. We have applied for the first or second week in June and will know soon which week we’ll receive. This trip is open to all Juniors and Seniors in 2012 and graduates. Please let me know if you have any questions. A lot of planning goes into this trip and I need to know ASAP how many are planning to join us next summer.

Parents: If you missed the parent meeting last week, I have some information for you. Please contact me when you can.

Staying in the Black on Black Friday
From Dave Ramsey’s email to those taking Financial Peace University Wednesdays this Fall comes a great message about the upcoming onslaught that can lead to stress and not peace. We edited for space.

The one-day sale that makes people lose their minds will be here in a week. Don’t go into Black Friday—or any of your Christmas shopping—without a plan to keep your Baby Step goals in tact!

If you have a strategy, you can stand strong in the face of the hottest day-after-Thanksgiving deals.

1. Make Your List and Check It Twice: If you’re going to get up at the crack of dawn to brave the crowds, decide what you are looking for ahead of time and what you will pay for it. Stay grounded in the midst of the hype, and whatever you do, don’t buy stuff that isn’t in the budget! You’ll be thankful when you’re not paying for this year’s Christmas a year from now. If you have the cash saved up and are feeling spunky, go for it!

2. Just Say No: Sleeping in after a full day of food and family might actually be in your best interest. Look at the Black Friday deals you’ve gotten before and ask yourself the simple question: Was it worth it? Most of the best deals are gone before the average person makes it to the store anyway!

3. Contentment Is Free: Gifts are fun, but there’s nothing that brings more joy during this season than being thankful for what we have. Think about who has blessed you with money or taught you how to handle it. Maybe it was your grandma, a parent or a family friend. Drop that person a note, make a call, or thank them in person. It’s a simple but powerful way to bless someone in your life and end up with a heart full of gratefulness yourself!

4. Make a Christmas Budget. Instead of going on auto-pilot, have a family meeting or get the decision-makers together and make a firm budget and keep it. Don’t use credit cards! You’ll be glad you didn’t when you are not paying for Christmas next May! Don’t be pressured by advertising to overspend. A sample budget is available at the coffee bar.

The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma is experiencing its greatest food shortage in 22 years. There are containers in the mall to collect these items.

A Message from Contact Christmas Store
Contact Church of Christ, a mission church in Tulsa, invites you to fill the lives of 120 families during this season. Our church family, a community of Christians hit hard by generational poverty and sin, serves as gracious hosts of an annual Christmas Store. The Store provides dignity to financially struggling folks by allowing them to purchase gifts for their children (babies–teens). Rather than receive a hand-out, they receive the toys/gifts at 25% of the original price. The money collected from the Christmas Store is used to sponsor our summer youth programs, such as a no-cost camp for urban youth. Here is how you can help:

1. Take the Contact shopping guide that will be passed out today and go out shopping with your family.
2. Make purchases from the gift suggestion list. Many agencies in Tulsa do not provide gifts for youth past the ages of 12-14. Gifts for teens are especially needed. Monetary donations are accepted if you prefer not to shop.
3. Bring your toys UNWRAPPED and with the PRICE TAGS STILL ON to your congregation’s toy collection box by Sunday, December 4th. Our toy store is on Saturday, December 10(10am-Noon)
4. Pray for 120 families to be touched by God’s grace. We are sending invitations to people that we hear of who are struggling financially from various congregations and in the community.

Healing Rooms
We just received information that there is a training session next week to help us learn how to pray for the sick. The training is led by a member of the International Association of Healing Rooms (HealingRooms.com).

Healing Rooms is a ministry in which a team of volunteers invites the Holy Spirit to touch and heal the sick.

Healing Rooms is a place where members of Christ’s body, of many churches and denominations, come to be trained, coached and gain experience in praying for the sick and hurting—enabling Christians to become more effective ministers of God’s love anytime, anywhere.

The training will be Friday, November 18, from 7-9 pm, and Saturday, November 19, from 9:30 am – 4:30 pm, in Room609. Cost for the training is $15, which includes lunch.

Healing Rooms will be open Thursday nights in the Prayer Room from 7-9 pm starting in December.

For more information contact David Harder, Healing Rooms Director, at DavidHarder@cten.org or 918-327-2218.

Memory Verses
October 9: Fasting – Matthew 4:4
October 16: Retreat – Psalm 46:10
October 23: Stewardship – Psalm 115:1,16; 1 Peter 4:10

Today’s Message
We’ve been participating in four practices that will help us prepare for Christlikeness as we launch into a “Year of Living Christ.” As you read through these, what is a common thread running through each?

1. Fasting – Many have participated in the beans and rice fast and have given money they saved on food or “cheat cards” to help the food pantry ministry feed the hungry. Fasting is a practice of Christ, and it helps us do spiritual inventory and takes away a dependence on food and reminds us of Christ’s words in Matthew 4:4, “Man cannot live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

2. Financial Peace – Fifty people from Garnett and Connection and neighbors kicked off the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University learning to live like no one else so we can give like no one else.

3. REVEAL – 55 people have taken the spiritual growth survey called “Reveal.” Thank you. This is a beginning stage of spiritual inventory as we begin a journey of Living Christ. Please use this link http://www.revealnow.com/slsurvey?uid=6275 to access the survey by October 22.

4. Retreat – 71 participated in the All-Church Retreat at New Life Ranch. Thanks to all who came or sacrificed so others could come. The weather was beautiful and the place was excellent, and the time together was even better than the weather and the place! We ate together, worshipped around the campfire, worshipped outdoors for Sunday am service, and focused on Psalm 46:10. Let’s do it again next year and double the number who come!

Courageous – The Movie
Four men, one calling: To serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, David Thomson, and Shane Fuller are confident and focused. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God … and to their children?

Taylor’s Life Group will be meeting tonight at 76:30 pm at the Cinemark at Tulsa, 10802 East 71st St., to see the 7 pm movie. Join us!

Thanksgiving Meal & Harvest Food Drive
The money given during the fast will go toward hosting a meal for those with no means or family to eat with on Thanksgiving. We’re hosting a Thanksgiving meal 11 am – 1 pm thanks to the generosity of Owasso Baptist Church making the meals, and we’ll go get it and serve it here at Garnett.

Student Ministry Parents (and Everyone else too!):
New curriculum is being fine-tuned, a calendar for the next year is being crafted, exciting new structure and opportunities are being developed and Sunday, November 13, to discover and discuss all the pertinent details. Get ready! More information about time and place soon.

Next Sunday Night Small Group will be November 6th. Stay tuned for more details.

Children’s Ministry
Kid City

A martial arts group called “The Combat Team” is coming Sunday, October 30, 11 am for our Kid City worship hour. The team captures attention of youth with high flying kicks, crushing concrete, smashing boards, and awesome displays of strength and power. But the purpose is to deliver a clear and powerful message using testimonies and personal experiences to effectively communicate the importance of a personal relationship with the Lord. The team travels throughout the world performing at churches, youth groups, prisons, and schools.

As a church, we want to do everything we can to support your spiritual growth. We want to know what’s helping you grow spiritually, and what’s getting in the way. So we need your help taking the REVEAL Spiritual Growth Survey that Greg Taylor talked about last Sunday. We will spend time taking the survey Oct 9, but we’d love for you to take it early so we can help those without computers to take the survey while together Sunday, Oct 9.

The survey is ready and you can take it now! Email us at garnettinfo@gmail.com

We are partnering in a significant way that we believe is part of a fulfillment of Jesus’s prayer for unity, that we’d all be one, that we’d learn from and grow together in Christ and not stand in the way when God’s Spirit is moving us to work together for a common cause of calling people far from God to become fully devoted followers of Christ. We are members of two different churches but citizens of the Kingdom of God together!

So today is the day we begin partnering with Connection Church in what is now called “Kid City”! Kid City is for infants to 5th graders. We invite all parents to come register your kids in the kiosks in Cafe Mosaic before or during adult worship. The children will be released to their worship and classes for Kid City at 10:30 am during Garnett worship. We are happy to have children of all ages in our Sunday gatherings for this first 30 minutes and then set them free for a little more kid-friendly loud movement learning about Christ and the Word. You can pick up your kids then at 12 pm after classes. If you have an infant – 2 year-old, you can check in before worship and pick up at any time.

We Need Your Help!
Sunday, October 9, we’re going to do something we’ve never done before. We’re asking you to bring your laptops, ipads, or any device that can pull up a web site. The reason for this is that we want to get everyone to participate that day in taking an online survey. We’ll be asking those with devices to help those without access to computers or difficulty using computers to take a Spiritual Life Survey that must be done online, because options change depending on responses you give.

The survey takes about 30 minutes. There will also be a way to complete this online later, and that internet link will be provided later, but we want to get as many people to do the survey while we’re here because we need a high percentage of us to complete in order to make the data meaningful. The survey findings will help shape our decisions about how to create the best possible ministry strategies to serve God and help our congregation grow spiritually. As a church, we want to do everything we can to support your spiritual growth. We want to know what’s helping you grow spiritually, and what’s getting in the way.

Student Ministry
Summer Fundraising Update: Change Can Totals
The spare change drive, led by Student Ministry for the benefit of our “One More” campaign, raised a total of $1257.60! Thank you to all that participated. Empty cans are available at the coffee bar and we are ready to send them home with you again to make this an on-going fundraiser. Just think… If we did this every 3 months, we could raise an additional $5,000 in the course of a year. Every penny helps, and they all add up.

Student Small Groups Starting in October
Student Ministry Life Group will begin meeting on the first and third Sunday evenings of the month beginning October 2 from 6-8pm. Locations will vary from time to time with the October 2nd group meeting at the Deavenport’s home in Broken Arrow. Contact Lance Newsom for more information, or if you would like to assist in facilitating this ministry.

Directory Pictures
We still need pictures for our new directory of some of you. Niki Erwin has volunteered to take your picture today after services in the mall. This will be the last time we’ll be taking pictures before the directory is printed.
