Please keep me in your prayers. I have some additional fluid on my heart. My cardiologist does not know the cause of this and hasn’t found a solution yet. He is sending me to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for tests. I will be going on February 14th. Milly Frost ________________ Make sure your friends are on the list!

Biblical Principles for Bartering, Buying/Sellling

Here are a few important biblical principles that guide us in dealing with one another.
1. Be honest. Leviticus 19:36 says, “Use honest scales and honest weights, an honest ephah and an honest hin. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt.” Huh? In other words, God is saying, “I treated you with grace and brought you out of slavery. Don’t enslave others by cheating them with dishonest scales, a common practice in ancient world and today in markets around the world. The ephah was a dry scale measure, and the hin was a liquid measure.
2. Make your intentions clear. Ruth 2 is a great model for how a benefactor and beneficiary interact. Boaz is the benefactor helping Ruth and making his intentions very clear. Ruth is the beneficiary receiving assistance and making her gratitude and intentions clear as well.
3. Deal fairly. When John the Baptist preached in preparation for Jesus coming, he laid out several principles for how to follow the new way of Christ. To those who asked what to do, he said to those with too much, to donate the extra. To tax collectors, he said not to overcharge. To soldiers, he said don’t extort money, accuse people falsely, and to be content with their pay rather than turning people over and shaking out their coins by force.
4. Don’t overcharge. Prophets and Levitical law prohibits usury, or excessive interest charged to members of the community or even to foreigners. In other words, don’t be a loan shark. Don’t charge excessive interest on loans. Leviticus 25:14, 36 say, basically, don’t oppress one another.
These principles are just a few of the biblical examples of how to do business with one another in the church, and with anyone. Be honest. Make your intentions clear. Deal fairly. Don’t overcharge.
In addition, we do not expect discounts because someone is a brother or sister in Christ, but negotiating a price to the mutual agreement of both parties is good. Brothers and sisters in Christ do not take advantage of one another, drag our heels to pay back, procrastinate returning something borrowed, or take the person helping for granted.
A person receiving assistance can look for ways to pass the service on or apply their own gifts in serving someone else. Jesus was not likely explaining business principles in Matthew 25:14-30, but we do learn from the parable of the talents that Jesus has something to say about those who multiply the good gifts given to them in productive ways to help others and support themselves and their families.
In everything, follow Christ’s Golden Rule that we keep shining up and living day after day. We re-state it this way: Do unto others as THEY would have you do unto them. Find out how to love someone and do it in your family, church, work, school, and neighborhood.

The Body of Christ helps one another in concrete ways.
Through informal sharing, Garnett Church’s “God Always Provides Fund” (GAP), Food Pantry, Clothing Closet, and Angel Food nearly 100 families in our church and community are cared for in meaningful ways each month.
Here is a list of needs we’ve heard about this week.
1. A family is seeking a van and if someone wants to donate to the church, we’ll give you a donation letter and pass the van on to the family in need. The family could also purchase the van if someone is selling.
2. A grandmother needs the following items to keep her twin granddaughters with her: queen mattress and frame (has box springs); full size bed frame, mattress & box springs; twin bed frame; bed linens; 2 child car booster seats; bath towels; toilet tissue; Dove soap and Tide Free or Gain laundry detergent; coats, clothes, and shoes for children size 5T and size 10 child shoe (our Clothes Closet doesn’t have these items).
3. African Children’s Choir wish list: 9 volt Duracell or Energizer batteries; childrens’ belts (not braided for sake of durability); Target and WalMart gift cards; dry erase whiteboard for school use; fingernail clippers; boys’ swim trunks (sz 10/12); new running shoes.
How can you respond to this and other needs?
First, You can help people by serving in or donating money, food, or clothing to the existing ministries or these above special needs. Reply to this Gmail with questions.
Second, You can also help by bartering with other members of the body. If you are a single guy who fixes cars, you may consider repairing the vehicle of someone who makes a great blackberry cobbler.
Third, You can buy and sell things to members of the body. I bought the truck I drive from a Garnett member, and we dealt with each other fairly.
You may have heard the old warning about doing business with family members. Our church encourages donating, bartering, and buying/selling to one another as long as we follow biblical principles for these activities.
Tomorrow we’ll post these principles.

Today is the big African Children’s Choir. Check with friends and family one more time to see if they can attend with you. The concert is free, but come with a love offering to give by check, cash, or credit card.
We’re hosting ACC because they are part of the worldwide Body of Christ. This gives us the opportunity to learn from one another, to enjoy each other, and to support one another in some meaningful way. The love offering will go to help thousands of students in Africa in addition to the choir children.
Come early and help set up, greet our guests, direct people in the parking lot, keep rest rooms clean, help at ACC tables, usher, and many other jobs we’ll all join in to host this incredible event for a packed house at Garnett Church of Christ.
See you tonight!
