Garnett Church of Christ is now The Journey: a new generation church of Christ. Here are some Frequently Asked Questions to help you out.
Where do you meet on Sundays?
Wright Christian Academy
11391 E. Admiral Pl
Tulsa, OK 74116
Where is your church office?
Our weekday location is more than a just a church office. Find us in the Briarglen Square shopping center on the southeast corner of 31st & 129th E. Ave. This is our “outpost” for ministry – where we give food & clothing, pray with you & our neighbors, & host small gatherings of children, youth, & adults. This is also the address you should use if you mail in your financial donations or have them automatically sent through your bank. We are remodeling this facility and securing city permitting, landlord approval, etc.
While we are currently occupying the space and it is functioning at a basic level, it will be 6-8 weeks before things are finished. We are working with Megan Chinowth, who is heading up the project and we will be using Helms Renovation and Bruce Judd to complete the build out. Our goal is having Alpha and other events there after our Easter launch on March 27th.

You meet in a school and office in a shopping center. Is this permanent?
We have three year leases beginning the end of 2015, which means we intend to worship at Wright Christian Academy and office at Briarglen Square at least till 2018, and longer if these locations work well.
Why are you leasing rather than having a church building?
Simply, God has not led us to build or occupy a church building. Repeatedly God has led us toward a modest monthly lease, and by God’s grace we have monthly expenses that are much lower than when we owned a building.
Where is the baptistry?
Plans are in the works to build a baptistry in the PAC at Wright. There is already plumbing there, and it has been approved by the elders. It will take a few weeks to ship the baptistry, and get it installed. When you are looking at the stage, it will be on the right, between the stage and the doors leading to the cafe area. In the meantime (and we have already used this once since meeting at Wright) we are able to use the baptistry at Memorial Church of Christ, just down the road.
What will happen to the Food Pantry and Clothing Closet?
We do plan to have a ministry to offer food and clothing at the Outpost location. There are some details to work out in our new space, along with some new and exciting ways we can partner with and serve our community. Our desire is to host people well, and we want to give a good first impression so we’re waiting for renovations to be done at the Outpost before we re-start this long-standing and very important ministry to our neighbors.
Were you previously another church?
Yes, our former name is Garnett Church of Christ. Garnett has a rich 46-year history and we carry that with us as we begin a new chapter as a church family as The Journey: a new generation church of Christ.
Why did you move?
In 2012 we felt God was leading us to get out of debt, so we began doing everything we could in order to pay down a decades-long debt load that most recently was $1.2 million. We did not initially intend to sell our building, but we believe God blessed us with a buyer, Union Public Schools, which paid $3.25 million for our former church property.
What are you doing with the rest of the money after paying off the debt?
After paying off our debt, the church remains with $2 million. We have established a missions foundation with $1 million of that $2 million. Our regular offerings are intended to pay our all monthly expenses for rent at Wright and church offices, salaries, and every other regular expense. The Journey does not intend to exceed our monthly giving with monthly spending, but the elders have seen fit to save additional money from the sale to be sure we have backup funds to re-launch the church over the next three years. The staff has access to limited funds each month, if overages occur where giving does not meet budget or needed spending, and this ensures the church has stability and growth in the next three years.
Were you able to keep anything from the old building?
Yes, we still have the large cross that was in the balcony of the Auditorium. It is currently at the church office, and it will be placed along with stained glass from the former Garnett Church building in a chapel in the church office building. We are even using wood from our old building to build a communion table at Wright for Sunday services.
Do you have a website?
We do! A brand new one, in fact. You can find it at www.thejourneychurch.faith On the website you’ll find recent sermons, weekly news, our mission/vision/values, staff bios, and much more!
Visit our new website at www.thejourneychurch.faith
As we looked toward all the new, exciting opportunities we feel God has for our congregation, we felt it was only fitting to begin this next chapter of our journey with a new name and identity. From here on out, Garnett Church of Christ is now…
New location. New name and logo. Same mission to “Invite all people into Christ centered life.”
You can find us on Sundays at Wright Christian Academy.

We will hold our final Worship Service at the current location on Sunday, November 29th. This will be a service of CELEBRATION of all that God has done through Garnett Church of Christ over the past 46 years. We will also be celebrating the journey we are on to continue to be a church following God’s lead as we move forward as The Journey: A New Generation Church of Christ.
In order for all of our church family to participate in this worship service we will not have any children, youth, or adult classes on Nov. 29th. We will have a fellowship time in the lobby with coffee and snacks starting at 10am. Service will begin at 10:45am.
We have a great collection of files and photos from our church history, but if you have photos of any symbolic eras or events or ministries from our church family’s history-we would love to see them! You can send them to Beth West or contact the church office.
It’s that time of year again! Time for s’mores, horseback rides, campfires, and fellowship with our Garnett family! We will be headed to New Life Ranch again this year (though we are in a brand new set of cabins!)
We will be there Friday November 6-Sunday November 8th. Please eat dinner before you arrive on Friday night. We will eat lunch at NLR on Sunday before we leave to come back to Tulsa.
Please feel free to invite others in our Garnett family to join us! You are welcome to join us for the whole thing, or just part. If you are planning to just attend part of the weekend, let Beth West know & she can get an adjusted price for you based on how long you will be there (& how many meals you will be eating with us).

Here is a short message from Greg:
In just a few days on Sunday February 1st, the African Children’s Choir will be here at Garnett Church of Christ! 20 children from Uganda will be performing featuring well-loved gospel songs as well as traditional African song and dance. You will be amazed by their harmonies, dancing and beautiful smiles.
The concert is free and open to all. A free-will offering is taken at the performance to support African Children’s Choir programs in education and relief and development. Since 1984, the Choir’s concerts have been their main source of funding to support over 52,000 students in 7 African countries.
The concert starts at 10:45am.
Please share the invite with family, friends and co-workers. If you have questions please call or email the office
We are joining with several other area churches again this year to provide baskets of non-perishable food (& turkeys!) for a Thanksgiving Feast to area schools. Garnett is responsible for collecting 120 cans of sweet potatoes & 60 cans of cranberries. We need all food by Sunday, Nov. 16. You can bring your donations on Sundays or drop it off at the church office.
We are participating in the Contact Christmas Store again this year. Your new, unwrapped packages with the price tags still on them can be brought to the church office, or left at the Coffee Bar.
The Christmas holiday revolves around acts of giving. Contact Church of Christ, a mission church in Tulsa, invites you to fill the lives of 120 families during this season. The Contact Church of Christ, a community of Christians hit hard by generational poverty and sin, serves as gracious hosts of an annual Christmas Store. The Store provides dignity to financially struggling folks by allowing them to purchase gifts for their children (babies–teens). Rather than receive a hand-out, they receive the toys/gifts at 25% of the original price. The money collected from the Christmas Store is used to sponsor our summer programs, such as Contact Bible Camp. Here is how you can help:
- Take the Contact shopping guide from your weekly bulletin, and go out shopping with your family.
- Make purchases from the gift suggestion list. Many agencies in Tulsa do not provide gifts for youth past the ages of 12-14. Gifts for teens are especially needed. Monetary donations are accepted if you prefer not to shop.
- Bring your toys UNWRAPPED and with the PRICE TAGS STILL ON to your congregation’s toy collection box by Wednesday, December 10th . Our toy store is on Saturday, December 13th (10am-Noon)
- Pray for 120 families to be touched by God’s grace. We are sending invitations to people that we hear of who are struggling financially from various congregations and in the community.
While the Christmas Store brings dignity and blessing now in this season, it also blesses children in the future. Our summer programs with urban youth will be blessed financially with the money that is collected on December 13th. Grace and peace as God blesses 120 families through your family.
