We incorporate activities like soccer, karate and clog dancing, a Zipline, water activities, crafts, and a Talent Show that will give children a great summer experience right in the middle of their neighborhood.</p>
<p>Families will connect with each other. People will make new friends. Kids will have a wild fun time. God’s love will be shared. We’ll sing, we’ll sweat, &amp; the neighborhood will be a great place to be! Lives will be changed and you’ll get to help make that happen.<strong><strong></strong></strong></p>
<p>This camp will depend on our Tribe Leaders and Activity Leaders who will use their gifts and love of people to lead neighborhood kids. This is where you come in!</p>

<div align="center"><strong> </strong></div>
<div><strong>Relaunch of MOPS on Mother’s Day 2012</strong><strong><br />
</strong>In Mother’s Days past we often give a flower or gift to moms. This year we decided to do something we hope to have a long-term and collective impact in our church and community.<strong> </strong>The Garnett Church leadership recognizes the plight of moms, both single moms and those with spouses who are struggling with preschool children and need life-giving ways to fellowship, train themselves as parents, and enjoy play times with other preschoolers.<strong></p>
<p></strong>I got a card in the mail recently addressed to “MOPS Coordinator” . . . but we haven’t had a MOPS program for years. Everyone “aged out” and didn’t replace themselves with leaders with younger children.<strong></p>
<p></strong>So we have two problems. Mothers struggling and needing a community of support . . . and we don’t have a director.<strong> </strong>We hope to see that change today . . . the Garnett elders, staff, and I want to present mothers of this church with a check for $1,000 to re-launch a MOPS or praying moms program in our church and community.<strong></p>
<p></strong>Starting today, the staff and I will begin taking names and contacts and making appointments with moms who would like to work as volunteer director of this group. We need a mom willing to invite people from inside and outside our church and who has great organizational skills to direct this new MOPS group.<strong></p>
<p></strong>We don’t often jump start ministries this way, but I feel led to do this today on Mother’s Day because of the great need we sense among moms of preschoolers. In addition to the $1,000 to begin the budget, we will also provide a regular and free place for the group to meet, play, have tea times together, and establish a strong presence in East Tulsa. <strong></p>
<p></strong>So if you are interested in simply being part of a MOPS group or additionally being a director and would like to interview about that, please write your name and contacts and write either “MOPS director” or “MOPS interest” on the tear off card in the bulletin and give it to someone at the coffee bar or Beth West.<strong></p>
<p></strong>Happy Mother’s Day 2012,<strong><br />

<div><strong>Student Ministry</strong><strong> </strong></div>
<div><strong>“1-2 Punch” for grades 6-12</strong></div>
<div><strong>Phase One:</strong></div>
<div>Garnett students are being called to participate as servant leaders and mentors at our annual Day Camp 4 Kids June 11-15 here at Garnett. Contact Lance Newsom at <a href="mailto:lancenewsom@gmail.com" target="_blank">lancenewsom@gmail.com</a> for more info.</div>
<div></div>
<div><strong>Phase Two:<br />
</strong>Nestled in the forest on the opposite side of the road from Harding’s Camp Tahkodah is an exotic, university-operated, hands-on training ground for practical Christian service. This Missionary Training Village (HUT – Harding University at Tahkodah) is the second phase of this year’s Summer Mission Trip opportunity for students 6-12 grade. We will travel to Arkansas July 12-15 where we will experience unique training scenarios and living conditions in one of several “third-world-environments.” This trip connects with our collective vision of expanding our understanding of God’s kingdom and community. The cost of this phase of our summer mission vision is $125 per person. Payment is due Sunday, June 3.</div>
<div></div>
<div><strong>Dry Bones Transportation</strong></div>
<div>I have an idea this year that I need your help with. The annual summer mission trip to Dry Bones Denver is always an enlightening experience for our students. This year we have the largest group ever to participate.</div>
<div></div>
<div>The trip costs $550 plus meals and some gear. This is a significant impact to the family budgets, so my idea is to ask our congregation to help subsidize the travel expenses of this trip. Would you be willing to invest $150-200 to each student and their family? This cuts a student’s trip expense to $400, offering you the opportunity to invest into their experience. Any gift would help, $50, $100, $1,000.</div>
<div></div>
<div>$600 of the $3400 has already been given! If we raise the whole amount, then our travel expenses are covered. If you are able and willing to help with this request, please see or contact Lance Newsom at <a href="tel:%28918%29694-9005" target="_blank">(918)694-9005</a> or <a href="mailto:lancenewsom@gmail.com" target="_blank">lancenewsom@gmail.com</a>.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Thank you in advance for considering “Placing Power Under” our Garnett students in this tangible way.</div>
<div>-Lance</div>
<div></div>
<div><strong>Senior Sunday 2012</strong></div>
<div>On May 20, we will be honoring our high school graduating seniors during our worship service and we also have a pot-luck dinner planned for that Sunday evening in Phillips Hall from 6-8pm for the Student Ministry and families of graduating seniors. If you would like to attend this dinner, please RSVP to <a href="mailto:lancenewsom@gmail.com" target="_blank">lancenewsom@gmail.com</a>.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Congratulations Seniors! We are all very proud and excited to support you in your future endeavors.</div>
<div><strong>Prayer Requests</strong></div>
<div>Please pray for Charlotte Burk&#8217;s Aunt Phyllis who recently fell &amp; broke her hip.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Kara Folkins’ mother is now in a &#8220;step down&#8221; unit from ICU and having complications with her recovery. They would appreciate continued prayers.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Please pray for Brian Baker and his team who left for Senegal Africa on May 7th.  He and 3 other students from the OSU campus ministry will be there for 6 weeks  working with Let’s Start Talking teaching English using the gospels.  Please pray for a safe and successful trip.</div>
<div><strong> </strong></div>
<div>Marvin Phillips Update: From Granddaughter Amy: I got to see Pawpaw (Marvin) in the hospital. I asked him if he wanted to say anything to those who love him and are praying for his recovery. He said: 1) Today is the best day yet; 2) thanks to all the people praying, fasting, and thinking of me; 3) Christianity is the best way to live, and the only way to die. What a fantastic thing to have been able to spend time with him today. What an encouraging man.</div>

<div>WOW!! Our new study, &#8220;SCHOOL OF THE MIND,&#8221; was off to a great start this past Wednesday night in the Center for Christian Living. The classroom kept growing with hungry learners. Dr. Jeff McIlroy is a most informative and exciting teacher. It&#8217;s not too late for you to participate in the study. Make plans to be present  Wednesday from 6:30 untill 8 PM. This week&#8217;s class will focus on, &#8220;<em><strong>Good News for the Blues</strong></em>.&#8221; Child care will be available.</p>
<p>Would a daytime class study be of interest? Bill Campbell has written a book entitled<em>,The Magnificent Life</em>, and would like to begin a discussion study based on this volume. This will be a daytime study with an hour and half time frame. The book would be available to participants for $10. Let Bill know by email (<a href="mailto:fccbrc@hotmail.com" target="_blank">fccbrc@hotmail.com</a>) this week if you are interested, and we will begin making arrangements for the class.<strong> </strong></div>

<div>Living Christ 29</div>
<div>Main Texts: Acts 22:3-5; 9:1-31</div>
<div>Memory: Acts 9:15-16<br />
<strong><br />
</strong></div>
<div><strong>Evil Genius: Who am I?</strong><strong><br />
</strong>I was described as the &#8220;evil genius&#8221; of the Nixon administration who once said I’d walk over my grandmother to get the president elected to a second term, and I spent the better part of a year in prison for a Watergate-related conviction. I prayed my first real prayer in the driveway of a friend after he told me about Jesus.</div>
<div>Then I read Mere Christianity to investigate the claims of Christ as God and came to believe with all my heart. I shudder to think of what I&#8217;d been if I had not gone to prison. Lying on the rotten floor of a cell, you know it&#8217;s not prosperity or pleasure that&#8217;s important, but the maturing of the soul. I was no longer a skeptic but many were skeptical of my new-found faith because of the abuses I had perpetrated as one of Nixon’s hatchet men. I spent the next 35 years steadfast in my efforts to evangelize a part of society scorned just as I was. And I became known perhaps just as much for my efforts to minister to prison inmates as for my infamy with Watergate. I was 80 years old when I died. Who am I?<strong></p>
<p></strong><strong>Ancient Terrorist: Who am I?</strong><strong><br />
</strong>I persecuted the followers of “the way” to their deaths, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison. I was described as the &#8220;persecutor&#8221; of the church, but on my way to Damascus I saw a light that literally blinded me. I heard a voice asking “Why are you persecuting me?”</div>
<div>A man named Ananias met me and baptized me, and I went on to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. People were afraid and skeptical because of the abuses I had perpetrated as one of Jewish hatchet men, so I focused my efforts on preaching not to the Jews but to the non-Jews who were called Gentiles. I spent nearly 35 years steadfast in my efforts to evangelize to a part of society scorned just as I was: the Gentiles. And I became known perhaps just as much for my efforts to minister to the Nations (and prisoners) as for my infamy in persecuting and killing Christians. I was about 60 years old at my death. Who am I?<strong></p>
<p></strong><strong>Small Group</strong><strong><br />
</strong>Read Acts 22:3-5; 9:3-31<strong></p>
<p></strong>These two stories&#8211;one very recent and one ancient&#8211;sound a lot alike. Do you know who these two people are? <strong></p>
<p></strong>What do you learn from their stories that sounds like your own story? Or what can you learn from their stories?<strong></p>
<p></strong>Both of these men were “Born Again” . . . And if people like these two men can become new men, what God can do in your life? <strong></p>
<p></strong>Are you born again?</div>

<div>Garnett Family,</div>
<div>We are getting closer to celebrating the high school graduation of our seniors and it seems an appropriate time to reflect on all of our roles in each other’s lives. This year, as we honor the efforts and important transition of our seniors and their families, I challenge you to reflect on what impact you’ve had in the lives of others. For each senior, did we accomplish having at least five significant adults in their lives from our church? Have we prayed for them and taught them as we agreed we would years ago—some when they were blessed as babies here? How have you impacted the lives of those around you? How can you pay it forward? If we are a family, then these are our students. We all play a role in their development. Thank you for supporting and loving our students throughout the years. As they embark on new journeys and face new challenges, it’s important to realize that our work is not done. It’s time to focus on new ways of offering love and support to these young adults as they enter new phases of life. Together, we are family.</div>
<div>Sincerely,</div>
<div>Lance Newsom</div>
<div>I have an idea this year that I need your help with. The annual summer mission trip to Dry Bones Denver is always an enlightening experience for our students. This year we have the largest group ever to participate. The trip costs $550 plus meals and some gear. This is a significant impact to the family budgets, so my idea is to ask our congregation to help subsidize the travel expenses of this trip. Would you be willing to invest $150-200 to each student and their family? This cuts a student’s trip expense to $400, offering you the opportunity to invest into their experience. Any gift would help, $50, $100, $1,000. If we raise $3400, then our travel expenses are covered.
<div>Thank you in advance for considering “Placing Power Under” our Garnett students in this tangible way.</div>

<div><strong>Jeff McIlroy</strong> <strong>Preaching Today</strong></div>
<div>(from Greg&#8230;)</div>
<div>I&#8217;ll be in Bartlesville today, preaching at Adams Blvd. Church of Christ. I grudgingly accepted because it&#8217;s my hometown, but I love preaching at Garnett more than any other place.</div>
<div></div>
<div>But . . . Alas! Dr. McIlroy is preaching and is a phenomenal speaker, doctor, thinker, inspirer, and&#8211;most of all&#8211;follower of Jesus. I&#8217;m happy we have a platoon of worthy and effective preachers&#8211;men and women&#8211;who stand firmly in my absence and preach the gospel. Thank you to Jeff and all who have preached over the last several years. Enjoy Jeff&#8217;s unique style and love for God, Scripture, his vulnerability, and love of a good story. I really wish I could be there to hear it, but I&#8217;ll listen online at <a href="http://www.garnettchurch.org/" target="_blank">www.garnettchurch.org</a> as you can all the sermons.</div>
<div></div>
<div><strong>Chick-fil-a Leadercast</strong></div>

I want to invite you to take a day off from work or block off a morning, afternoon or the whole day and come to join us at Garnett for an annual event that brings people together to talk about leadership.</div>

<div>There will be a wedding shower for B. J. Lee, son of Robin Lee, and Leanne Haymes after classes today in the Great Room.</div>

<div><strong>Student Ministry</strong></div>
<div><strong>“1-2 Punch” for grades 6-12</strong></div>
<div><strong>Phase One:</strong> Day Camp 4 Kids was developed to provide our community kids a fun place to experience God’s love for them and their families. Our Garnett students are being called to participate by joining us here on the church grounds by being leaders and mentors during the week of June 11-15 to the young minds and hearts of our community. Packed full of fun activities like soccer, karate, clog dancing, Zip-line, water activities, crafts, and a talent show, there is opportunity to join in for the full week or partial week. There is something for everyone – even adults! So please take seriously the opportunity to join us in creating this special time for our community youth. You will be glad you participated.</div>
<div></div>
<div><strong>Dry Bones:</strong><strong> </strong></div>
<div>For Garnett, this unique trip, limited by number of participants as well as age, has become an important part of who we are and how we view God’s world. The philosophies shared and experienced on this trip have become an important highlight to our summer missions for students and adults alike. This trip will take place from June 10-17. Your prayers are appreciated for safety and expansion of not only our comfort zones, but also our understanding of our purpose and roles in God’s story. Next payment of $200 is due Sunday, April 29.</div>
<div><strong> </strong></div>
<div><strong>High Point Ranch Summer Camp: July 22-27.</strong></div>
<div>This summer tradition at Garnett has proven to offer some of the most important experiences and memories for our students over the last decade. Once again this year we will fill the week with fun, food, sun, water, rocks, slip-n-slides, big sky, laughter, tears, crafts and, most importantly, powerful group worship and lessons designed to bring us closer to God. More details coming soon.</div>
<div></div>
<div><strong>Note:</strong> Diligent effort is taken each year to balance trip fees while considering family budgets. Understanding that, as a family, we all play a role in the development of our youth, we offer opportunities for everyone to participate in activities. From transportation to being chaperones, or funding expenses not covered by fees, we can all help and be part of a student’s life. Contact Lance Newsom at <a href="mailto:lancenewsom@gmail.com" target="_blank">lancenewsom@gmail.com</a> if you would like to subsidize student ministry summer activities.</div>

<div>First of all,<br />
We really are thankful for Garnett Church of Christ for their generous donation. The drilling kit will be used with the other one already in country to build 6 wells this year. The Eastern Province of Rwanda has severe water problem that we are trying to tackle. We have a goal of providing 100 wells within the next 4 years. In order to reach that goal, we need more equipment to make available to the teams we have trained.</div>
<div>Vedaste and myself are heading to Rwanda this May to coordinate all these activities.</div>
<div>Greg and Lance, if you have any questions about us, please let us know. We will be more than happy to give answers as we can.<br />
Last, please thank the people of Garnett Church of Christ on our behalf for the good work that God is doing through them.</div>

<div>Summer is rapidly approaching and for students, it&#8217;s packed full of activity and opportunity. This year is no exception. Watch for fundraising opportunities and other ways you can participate in making our summer activities successful and blessings for all.</div>
<div></div>
<div>Parents: I will very soon have details to share with you regarding our mission trip opportunity for all 6-12 graders!</div>

<div>
<div><strong>Living Christ 25</strong></div>
<div><strong>Palm Wonderful</strong><strong>: Luke 19:36-48</strong></div>
<div><strong>Memory:</strong> “If you had only known on this day what would bring you peace . . .”</div>
<div><strong> </strong></div>
<div>The Sunday before Easter is called “Palm Sunday” because people hailed Jesus as a king with palm branches by the road and even laid down their garments for the donkey he was riding to walk on. They shouted, “Hosanna! Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Psalm 118:26). Some Pharisees said, “Teacher, tell your disciples to shut up!”</div>
<div></div>
<div>I love Jesus reply: “If they keep quiet, the rocks are going to cry out!” But Jesus cried next. Jesus wept over Jerusalem. He says, “If you had only known on this day what would bring you peace&#8211;but now it is hidden from your eyes.” He goes on to say that the city will be destroyed because they did not recognize God’s coming.</div>
<div></div>
<div>When Jesus entered into the temple area, everything was pandemonium. A place that was for prayer and peace and worship of God Almighty had been transformed into a bustling market and temple to the almighty denarius, the Roman currency. So he began flipping tables over and driving the animals and people out of the temple courtyards.</div>
<div></div>
<div>I imagine Jesus released doves meant for sacrifice from cages, but this would not delight the audiences like a magician’s doves flying out of a box. The people were furious, the Pharisees were plotting, and Jesus knew he was going to die. But what killed his heart was the way people missed God’s coming into the world, had replaced devotion to him with consumerism.</div>
<div></div>
<div>And because they did not recognize Jesus as the Son of God, they figured him for an imposter and a rebel who stirred up the people, so the Jews and Romans conspired to punish him by crucifixion. But here&#8217;s the turnabout of the ages: What humans meant for hate and punishment, God meant for the redemption of the world. This is a great mystery, but &#8220;God so loves the world that He gave his only Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world but to save the world through him&#8221; (John 3:16-17).</div>
<div></div>
<div>Are we like those in Jerusalem who fail to see God come to us in Christ? Do we know what would bring us peace? Have we made his dwelling place&#8211;our bodies, other holy places&#8211;a market? Has our identity become that of consumers rather than worshipers? Consider these questions then pray the following questions to God. Don’t discuss them and fall back on old political, social, cultural, religious thinking. Read the story in Luke 19:36-48 and pray these questions and let God work in your group or family or individually.</div>
<div></div>
<div>What are the tables that Jesus would turn over today? What are the tables that need to be turned over in my life? What are the tables that need to be turned in our church? What are the tables that our small group needs to pray about and turn over together? What tables need overturned in our neighborhoods, city, state, nation, world?</div>

<div><strong>Work Day</strong></div>
<div>You like to get things done! So come Saturday, 9am-1pm, and help prep the grounds for the 5K4KDZ and Day Camp. We have a massive brush pile and permission from fire chief to burn, so we need help adding to brush. While we&#8217;re at it, let&#8217;s roast some hot dogs! Bring gloves, sticks for hot dogs, tools like chainsaws, outdoor garden tools. Those with last names A-G bring hot dogs, buns, plates; names H-O chips, mustard, relish; names P-Z bring drinks, cups, ice. This is simple, outdoor, fun as always work day. As we work we&#8217;ll be mindful of the way God works on our campus and people grow spiritually and physically here, and we&#8217;ll pray and imagine how we can do a great job with the upcoming race and camp.</div>
<div></div>
